Ludwig* — my 1986 Wolfsburg-edition Jetta — retailed for just under $8000, new. Nearly 40 years later, this German wonder-car journeys on: a testament to great engineering, devoted caretaking, and the unsurpassed mechanical skills of Charlie Faillace (Charlie’s Auto Repair, Bethel, CT). Next up: figuring out how to convert this classic car to an environmentally friendly vehicle. Any suggestions?

* Behind the name: Ludwig Soder was an accomplished amateur videographer — and the first owner of my car. The remarkable footage he shot while canoeing, hiking, and observing wildlife throughout Europe and North America reflected his love of the natural world and commitment to “taking nothing but pictures, leaving nothing but footprints, killing nothing but time.” His spirit continues to inspire me.
